To rent and drive a car legally in Vietnam, you typically need the following documents:

1. Valid Passport
Foreign renters must provide a passport for identity verification when signing the rental contract.

2. Valid Visa or Temporary Residence Card
This confirms your legal stay in Vietnam and is usually required by rental companies.

3. Valid Driving License
You must have a driving license from your home country that matches the vehicle type you plan to drive.

4. International Driving Permit (IDP)
Vietnam accepts IDPs issued under the 1968 Vienna Convention. Without a valid IDP, driving may not be legal and insurance coverage could be affected.

5. Security Deposit
Most self-drive rental services require a refundable deposit, typically paid by credit card or cash depending on the vehicle.

6. Contact Information
You may need to provide a local phone number and accommodation address to ensure smooth communication during the rental period.

7. Rental Agreement
Before receiving the vehicle, you must review and sign a rental contract covering rental duration, insurance policy, fuel rules, and responsibility for vehicle damage.
